Outreach

The Southern California Section has many events to reach out to and engage our local community. National Chemistry Week (in October) and Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (in April) are both National ACS events that our Section participates in to engage elementary school through university level students. Project SEED is an National ACS summer program that puts high school students in a laboratory environment to provide them an opportunity to engage in an authentic research experience. The Undergraduate Research Conference invites local undergraduate students to present their research in a formal setting. The High School Teacher’s Meeting is a local section opportunity for teachers to learn from fellow chemistry teachers. The High School Olympiad has been a Southern California Section tradition since 1914. Local students take the local section exam in March to see if they qualify to take the National exam in April. Top students are honored at our Educational Awards Banquet in May with certificates and monetary awards. We encourage our fellow members to volunteer for any of these events to reach out to the community and be involved!

The Local Section Activities Committee of the American Chemical Society (LSAC) organized a nationwide webinar on July 17, 2024 to highlight the various grants available to local sections such as LSAC DEIR/IPG/MEET/Science Café grants. In this webinar, LSAC encouraged all sections to submit proposals and conduct activities benefiting all denominations of the population through these grants.
