On July 13, at a ceremony held in the United Arab Emirates, the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) gave awards to student competitors from around the globe. The event took place from July 5 to July 14. Team USA, as a whole, received four gold medals. Madni, Shah, Wang, and Zhou all won gold. Congratulations to Team USA!
This year’s US team consisted of:
Adam Madni, Carmel High School, IN, Indiana Local Section
Yash Shah, Panther Creek High School, NC, North Carolina Local Section
William Wang, Lakeside Upper School, WA, Puget Sound Local Section
Max Zhou, San Marino High School, CA, Southern California Local Section
The two alternates are:
1st alternate: Samuel Xu, Newton South High School, MA, Northeastern Local Section
2nd alternate: Yuqing Liu, Westwood High School, TX, Central Texas Local Section
Team USA will be supported during the IChO by the following mentors:
Dr. Songwen Xie, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, MA, Head mentor
Mrs. Komal Jain, Lake Braddock Secondary School, VA, High Schoolmentor
Dr. Steve Lantos, Brookline High School, MA, High School mentor
Dr. Borislava Bekker, American River College, CA, College Mentor
The team took part in an intensive 2-week study camp held at the University of Maryland, College Park, where they competed with 16 other student finalists to be selected.
This year’s IChO included participants from 90 countries competing for medals. This included two observer countries—Ghana and Honduras—that will be able to participate after meeting certain requirements and observing for 2 years. Two comprehensive examinations—a 5 h lab practical and a 5 h written theoretical examination—were used to rank students to receive medals.
Next year’s IChO will be hosted by Uzbekistan. Information about this year’s IChO, including results and photos, can be found at www.icho2025.ae. More information about the international competition, including regulations, the foundation, interest from new countries, and more, can be found on www.ichosc.org.
