The Many Faces of Chemistry

2007 is the 20th Anniversary of the National Chemistry Week program! Everyone is encouraged to use this year’s theme to celebrate 20 wonderful years of community outreach as well as to highlight the many faces in their local areas who make outstanding contributions to chemistry or the chemical sciences. Fall Activities:

Saturday, October 13, 2007 (9 am – 4 pm) Sally Ride Science Festival at Cal State Los Angeles. Join the CSULA Student Affiliates and the Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) for a day of fun activities and workshops at the Sally Ride Science Festival. We need local section volunteers to help with activities at the Festival’s street fair and with the workshops. October 21-27 – (Varying Times) National Chemistry Week Activities at the California Science Center. Join volunteers at the California Science Center for NCW activities throughout the week. Participate in “The Many Faces of Chemistry” National Chemistry Week Poster Contest! —- Prizes! Encourage K – 12 students to participate in this great contest. This year’s poster contest focused on chemistry and careers (with emphasis on chemistry/chemical principles or concepts in different careers). Saturday, November 17, 2007 Caltech Energy Conference hosted by the Caltech Center for Sustainable Energy Research (CCSER). This event will be held at Caltech from 8 – 4 pm. Saturday, March 17, 2007: Expanding Your Horizons Workshop at Mount St. Mary’s College, Doheny Campus

Expanding Your Horizons is a career day coordinated by Math/Science Interchange intended to inform young women about careers in math- and science- related fields. The conference is intended for girls in grades 5-8. Girls participate in hands-on workshops. There are also workshops for parents, teachers and counselors about making math and science an option for girls. There is a $10 fee for each participant to cover lunch and materials. Conference check-in for paid and registered participants begins at 8:45 a.m. at Building 4. Saturday, March 24, 2007: Sally Ride Science Festival at Caltech

The Local Section will be co-hosting an activity table and hands-on science talks with Cal State Northridge and the Center for the Science and Engineering of Materials at Caltech. Saturday, April 21, 2007: Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) Event at Cal State Northridge

The Local Section and Cal State Northridge will be hosting a major event for CCED 2007: “Recycling – Chemistry Can!” Join us! The event is from 10 am – 3 pm. CSUN students and local high school students are planning the event and will present workshops and demonstrations in science and engineering. Saturday, May 12, 2007: Creating Tomorrow’s Engineers and Scientists Today – Family Technology Outreach Program at Exposition Park Ahmanson Senior Center (EPICC) 3990 S. Menlo Ave, LA CA 90039, Exposition Park from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. This event is sponsored by the City of Los Angeles African American Engineers Professional Employees Association (AAEPEA). Saturday, June 2, 2007 (New Date!): Opportunities for You in Science and Engineering Conference at Caltech

This is a program that encourages high school students to study science and engineering. The event includes talks on innovations in science and engineering, tours of labs, talks on getting financial aid and college admissions, and hands-on activities. The event will be hosted by Caltech’s Center for the Science and Engineering of Materials, The HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Program, and the local section.
