October 22, 2011—California Science Education Conference Breakfast featuring Shirley Corriher, ACS member and noted food writer. The Conference takes place at the Pasadena Convention Center. ACS Members are being given the opportunity to purchase a ticket to the breakfast without having to register for the conference. Tickets must be purchased in advance by October 7, 2011. A limited number of tickets are available so please reserve your space early. Tickets for the breakfast are $30.

SCALACS is hosting a table at the Conference on Friday and Saturday. For more information or to volunteer, contact Bob de Groot at rdegroot@oxy.edu.

Saturday, April 2, 2011 (8:45 am to 2:45 pm)The Expanding Your Horizons Conference for middle school girls will take place at Mount St. Mary’s College Doheny Campus, 10 Chester Place, Los Angeles, CA 90007, Los Angeles. Expanding Your Horizons is a career day supported by SCALACS and organized by MATH/SCIENCE INTERCHANGE to inform young women about careers in math- and science-related fields. The conference is intended for girls in grades 5-8. Girls participate in hands-on workshops such as dissecting pig hearts, isolating DNA, and making colors with chemistry. There are also workshops for parents, teachers and counselors about making math and science a career option for girls. There is a $10 fee for each participant to cover lunch and materials.
