The Southern California Section of the American Chemical Society is co-hosting a lecture at California State University Long Beach, Room HSCI-103 on Friday night, February 22, 2019. The seminar is free, but we are offering pizza and soda/water for $5. Pizza will be available from 6:00 – 7:00 pm and the lecture and question and answer period will be from 7:00 – 8:15 pm.
Our speaker is William Mills [BSc(hons), MBMSc], the Technical Advisor for Syft Technologies, Christchurch, New Zealand. His lecture will focus on Selected Ion Flow-Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS). SIFT-MS has caught the eye of both the medical and health and safety industries as a
technique to measure gases and liquids.
In the past 50 years analytical/diagnostic capabilities have dramatically evolved, resulting in increased efficiency and sensitivity. In the modern age, we have more accurate diagnosis and quicker treatment than ever before, with a trend towards less invasive techniques. Similarly, health and safety thresholds for toxic compounds are ever-decreasing as scientific advances uncover their harmful effects in workplace environments, especially in industries. Keeping up with these, industrial establishments are constantly on the lookout for tools/techniques that provide a unique mix of three attributes:
- The ability to measure samples fast (speed)
- The ability to measure samples in very low concentrations (sensitivity)
- The ability to measure different compounds at the same time (simultaneousness)
The need for faster chemical analysis is becoming increasingly sought after in a world where time is becoming a commodity. This presentation will showcase an up-and-coming technology with huge potential to change the way in which medical diagnostics and occupational health and safety are performed and regulated. We will explore how SIFT-MS works, how it compares to traditional techniques, and how SIFT-MS is currently used across a wide range of applications, including those within the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry.
