2014-04-12: Chemistry Bowl Competititon at Pasadena City College

Saturday, April 12, 2014
8:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Chemistry Bowl Competition
Pasadena City College

1570 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91106

The Chemistry Bowl will be a competition between local ACS student chapters in the Southern California region. The competition will consist of spectroscopy, lab bench challenges, relay obstacle course, and chemistry jeopardy. Please contact Dr. Veronica Jaramillo, vijaramillo-at-pasadena-dot-edu, for more information on how you can help make this event successful, or if your chemistry club would like to participate.

The first lab bench challenge will be a titration where teams are given a set amount of time to determine the concentration of an unknown solution and then are judged by their precision, accuracy, and lab technique. In the spectroscopy challenge, teams are given a spectra to determine the correct chemical structure. The battery building challenge will require teams to build a galvanic cell. The relay obstacle course will be done out in the stadium and will consist of a chemistry themed relay. Last is the chemistry jeopardy finale where the top three teams will compete to determine a winner. The chemistry content will be limited to general and organic chemistry. All teams competing will consist of five members.

All competing teams will be divided into two groups and will be rotated. For example, Round 1 for a six team competition will begin with three teams doing battery building and the other three teams doing titration. For Round 2 the teams will alternate. This will repeat for Round 3 and 4. During Lunch the judges will add up the scores and announce the top three teams to compete in Chemistry Jeopardy.
