“The Man in the White Suit”

Back by popular demand, Southern California Section’s innovative Science in the Cinema – Los Angeles Program features the film, “The Man in the White Suit”, starring Alec Guiness and Joan Greenwood. The film was directed by Alexander Mackendrick in 1951.

Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness) invents an indestructible cloth that never gets dirty and celebrates by having a white suit made of the fabric. But soon, the lowly mill workers start fearing for their jobs, while the mill owners, led by the decrepit Sir John Kierlaw (Ernest Thesiger), worry about their profits. Chase scenes and double-crosses ensue as the impish Stratton (wearing his luminous suit) struggles to defend his discovery from the mob.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Henry Abrash, is an emeritus professor of chemistry at California State University, Northridge. Dr. Abrash will discuss science and technological obsolescence. Refreshments are available at the “old fashioned candy stand”.

“The Man in the White Suit” is scheduled from 7-10 p.m. in Ballroom B of the CSUDH New Student Union, 1000 E. Victoria Street, Carson, CA. Admission is free. Parking is free. Park in Lot 3 or Lot 6. Directions from Parking Lot 3 to the Student Union (located in the center of campus). Enter the campus from Victoria Street, turn right on Tamcliff to enter the campus. Go into Parking Lot 3. Walk towards the right side of the Administration Bldg. which has California State University Dominguez Hills on top. Follow the path past that building and up a flight of stairs which brings you to the center of campus. Turn right and the Student Union is on the left side of the path. Walk along the Student Union until you see the opening which is the Palm Courtyard. Turn left into Palm Courtyard and walk through it to the doors of the Student Union. To the right is the Information Desk. Ballroom B is one flight up from the Information Desk. Take either the elevator or the staircase from the Food Court (adjacent to the Information Desk).
