2006-03-16/17:
Local High School Chemistry Olympiad

2005 was our most successful year for the ACS High School Chemisty Olympiad. We had over 1,100 students representing 29 schools participating. From these students, three were selected for the National study camp, with two of them going to the International Olympiad in Taiwan, where they each received Silver Medals.

I would like to increase this program, but we need to reach as many schools and students as possible. If your local high school has not participated in the ACS Chemistry Olympiad, ask them to consider participating. Not only is the exam the only way a student may qualify for the National exam, but it is also an excellent source for a chemistry teacher to obtain tests for classroom study, as well as being able to compare the accomplishments of their students with those in other Los Angeles County schools.

The local exam will be given on March 15th or 16th at high schools in Los Angeles County that have 10 or more students registering. The National exam will be held on April 22nd, with the top 20 students in the nation attending a two week camp at the Air Force Academy on June 4th through 18th. The top four students will then be attending the International Olympiad in Korea from July 2nd through 16th.

The “early bird” registration fee is only $5 FOR 10 OR MORE REGISTRANTS, if paid by February 3rd. After that, the fee is $7 until March 3rd, then it increases to $10. The top students from each school, as well as their teachers, will be recognized at the Education Awards Banquet on June 2nd at St. Mary’s College.
