2009-02-21: Leadership Conference

The Southern California Section will be presenting the “Engaging and Motivating Volunteers” workshop in conjunction with a special session “Broadening the Impact of ACS Community Activity Programs.” “Engaging and Motivating Volunteers” focuses on how you can become an effective leader whether it is ACS, community volunteer activities, or interactions on the job. The skills for success are broadly applicable. You will learn how to:

  • ask others to step up and participate
  • delegate and share responsibility
  • motivate others
  • keep projects moving forward.

    • “Engaging and Motivating Volunteers” is especially valuable for those who are new to leadership roles, but is also relevant for more experienced leaders who could benefit from additional guidance in making leadership assignments successful. ACS Community Activity Programs such as National Chemistry Week are among the most publicly visible local section activities. Taking into consideration what was learned in the Involving Volunteers workshop “Broadening the Impact of ACS Community Activity Programs” you will explore:

  • important criteria for public outreach initiatives (e.g. public relations)
  • collaboration between local sections
  • design and documentation of measurable objectives
  • creating viable external partnerships

    Who: Teams of ACS emerging and experienced local section leaders
    When: Saturday February 21, 2009, 8:30 am – 4 pm
    Where: California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA.

    Enrollment is limited to 25 people and registration is on a first come, first served basis. We highly encourage local sections attend in teams of 2+ people. Continental breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack will be provided. Limited reimbursement for mileage will be available. In support of the Society’s emphasis on sustainability, local sections that carpool to this workshop will receive a special bonus gift.
