The Southern California Section (SCALACS) was awarded an ACS Innovative Project Grant to launch the Science in the Cinema-Los Angeles program. Similar to the Science in the Cinema program started at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), our program presents feature films with science themes, followed by a guest speaker's discussion on a related topic.

The Science in the Cinema-Los Angeles program focusses on bringing together students from different disciplines - such as chemistry, film and communications - for informal discussions. Our goal is to get film and communication students to better understand science, and science students to value good communication skills. According to the National Science Foundation, the representation of science in popular culture plays a very important role in the public's perception and in students' career choices.
