2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of National Chemistry Week and this year’s theme is “Chemistry Rocks!” This event kicks off a yearlong celebration so look out for other NCW themed events and programs throughout 2017!

The Gem and Mineral Hall displays more than 2,000 spectacular specimens within two large galleries that comprise what is considered to be one of the finest exhibits of gems and minerals in the world. Overall, the exhibit features an incredible array of gems and minerals from all over the globe as well as an extensive collection of California specimens.

Our tour will be lead by Collections Manager, Allyssa Morgan. Alyssa began collecting rocks and meteorites as a child, which was the beginning of a life-long passion for science. She received her bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Washington and her master’s degree in Geological Sciences from Brown University. Her specialties were experimental igneous petrology and planetary geology and her research focused on the petrogenesis of lunar volcanic rocks and the composition and evolution of the lunar mantle.
